Fairgrounds 5K and Mile

Runners of all ages lined up under sunny skies at the Cumberland Fairgrounds on Sunday morning, ready to test their fitness in the inaugural Fairgrounds 5K and Mile races. The community-focused event blended spirited competition with a family-friendly atmosphere, drawing athletes from across southern Maine.
The Elite Mile brought the drama. With a strong finishing kick, Luke Marsanskis edged out Aaron Willingham in the final 10 yards, crossing in 4:21.99. The women’s mile saw Clare Franco put up a strong performances with a wire-to-wire victory in 5:26.87.
Matt Rand secured victory in the men's open mile with a time of 4:42.81, while Daniel Bannon took second place, finishing in 4:52.72. Ayla Strattard won the women's division, finishing ahead of Lucy Flores. Ayla posted a time of 6:49.67. Lucy finished second in 7:12.62.
In the 5K, Colin Cernik took command early, surging ahead on the second loop before breaking the tape in 14:43.12. On the women’s side, Emily Durgin impressed with a decisive move after the mile mark, cruising home in 18:56.26. Both performances capped a splendid day that balanced fast times with celebration.
Beyond the leaders, the Fairgrounds atmosphere was electric: youth runners sprinting their first mile, masters athletes showing resilience, and entire families crossing the finish line together. Volunteers and spectators lined the final stretch, giving the races a true small-town festival feel.
