- Bryant University Throws Competition (Masters)
Smithfield, RI On Sunday, Bryant University held its Throws Competition with the high school athletes throwing in the morning and the Masters athletes competing in the afternoon. The Masters competition included the super weight! The Bryant event might be one of the last competitions to set a qualifying mark for the Masters national event held in Florida in March. (That super weight is one mean looking weight ball. ) A short Masters shot put compilation video and pictures below
- Bryant University Throws Competition (High School)
Smithfield RI "Does anyone else think this is a bad idea," I thought to myself after I read that Discuss was on the slate of throws for the afternoon. Bryant University has a very large and wonderful indoor facility (Conaty Indoor Athletic Center.) It is like a football field indoors. Bryant University's Throws coach Shay Austin-Leary is a fantastic and welcoming host. She loves throws and hosted a great event on Sunday, the Bryant University Throws Competition, for high school and masters throwers. Bryant University will host a full slate of colleges on Wednesday.
- Top New England High School Weight Throw
It takes strength and speed and timing to be successful in the Weight Throw. When it is executed correctly, it is a beautiful thing to behold. Some of the best weight throwers in the country are in our back yard. The following New England High School athletes are tops in our area and rank high in the nation. The top throw in the country belongs to Rhode Island's Shamrock Thoun (Woonsocket.) He threw 79' 4.25" at the U.S. Marine Corps Holiday Classic on December 28. The third longest throw was made by Jack Harmon (North Kingstown, RI) at 72' 7.75" on Decmeber 21 at the RIIL Dual Meet. Massachusetts' Alex Jackson threw 70' 4" for the fourth longest throw in the country this year. Alex throws for Peabody Vet. Mem. in MA; he made his mark on December 14 at the NEC Winter Invitational. The fifth longest throw belongs to Rhode Island's Owen Spira at 69' 10.75". Owen throws for Exeter-West Greenwich. Marshall throws for Simsbury and recorded his long throw at THROWHAWKS Holiday Classic. There is more of the same on the girls side, outstanding throwers from New England states dominate the top 20 longest throws. Rhode Island's Gifty Bediako (Classical) has the top throw in the nation. There's been some top competition in New England so far this season. Some of the fastest times in the country have happened in our backyard. Xenia Raye , Lisa's talented sisted and competing for West Warwick High, ran 24.62 (Beantown Winter Classic) to post the seventeenth fastest time. Breanna Braham of Dennis-Yarmouth Regional dipped under 57 seconds to run 56.68 to post the 20th fastest time in the country. Breanna ran her fantastic time at the MSTCA Boston Holiday Challenge In the 55M run, Machai Henry from Danbury High School, Danbury CT, ran an outstanding 6.42 at the Beantown Winter Classic. That time has him tied for the fifteenth fastest time in the nation. In the 200M, Tayedza Jaravaza ran 21.81 at the BU Mini Meet in mid-December. Tayedza runs for Wilbraham & Monson (Wilbraham, MA) and his time is the twelfth fastest time in the country this year. Brady Thomas from Walpole High School dipped under fifty seconds (49.43) has a terrific meet at the MSTCA Holiday Challenge a few days ago. Brady's time puts him at number 18 in the nation. I look forward to being near the finish line, seeing more of your fast times and having my camera in focus from time to time!

- Beantown Winter Classic - outstanding performances
Boston, MA On Sunday, I got to witness a couple of amazing performances in the 2 Mile run. At the time, I could not appreciate how special the performances were because I was spending way too much time getting shots in focus (or not in focus!) Tamrat Gavenas, running for Andover Phillips Academy (MA), posted the fastest time indoors this year in the 2 Miles. Following the pacer from Battle Road Track Club for the first mile, Tamrat was on pace to set a fast time. The hard work often comes when the pacer drops off, and the racer is left on their own. Tamrat ran the second mile unaccompanied, finishing 9:04.03. That time was faster than his best time in the two miles by nearly ten seconds. An outstanding personal best. Tamrat in the portion of the race where the pacer had successfully brought him through the one mile mark. Tamrat running alone and putting in the work. One lap to go, with a sub nine-minute indoor 2 mile effort just out of reach It is only December, but 9:04 is outstanding! Tamrat finishing strong. In the girls 2 mile run, seven of the ten fastest times in the nation came from the race on Sunday!! I know, I know...it's only December, but C'mon man, seven outstanding times in one race! Let's celebrate it! Early in the 2 Mile run, Keaney Bayha of Pilgrim High School (RI) takes the race out hard, creating separation from the trailing pack of runners. I don't know much about Keaney, but I get from this race that she's not afraid to push the pace and run alone Keaney Bayha continues to push the pace and lead the racers through the halfway point in the girls 2 Mile run. Although the pack has decreased Keaney's early lead, she is showing no visible signs of stress from the early fast pace. Leyla Bhusri (718) of Shenendehowa Central and Keaney Bayha of Pilgrim running stride for stride. At this point in the race, Leyla and Keaney have separated themselves from the other racers and the race winner will come from this group. Leyla Bhusri of Shenendehowa in the final stages of the 2 mile run, alone and pushing the pace. That's what relief looks like! Leyla Bhusri crossing the finish line and posting the second fastest time in the country. I'm glad I was able to witness such outstanding performances. I sincerely hope to see you all on the short track soon! I will be at the Reggie tomorrow during the day (MSTCA Distance) and at New Balance in the evening (USATF-NE Night at the Track.)
